Let’s begin with the elements for a perfect picnic: A beautiful location, delicious food, music, cohesive theme and decoration. Keep reading for tips and my personal experience on how to make your dream picnic happen.
Your Ultimate Guide to Hosting the Perfect Picnic
Location, location, location….! In my opinion this is the most important element to contemplate for creating the ambience you desire. For instance, I already knew I wanted the picnic to be on the beach but I also had to choose which beach of San Diego would be the best fit for my vision of the party.
As an example I considered Mission Beach that has this surf and young crowd feels plus beautiful sunsets. But in my mind I wanted a more lay back yet sophisticated white sandy beach concept so that is how I decided to do it in Coronado Beach.
You have to also consider that the location is your outdoors venue and think about the natural backdrops this location has to offer. For this party, I knew that the beach itself and the Hotel Del Coronado would be a beautiful backdrop on the photos. This idea is handy in case your are also planning to do photoshoot of the event like I did or just take spectacular photos with your guests.
The beach is great but you can also look for other locations like park with city views, field of flowers or by a river or lake if you have them in your area. A great way to find a beautiful locations in your city is to look it up online or on travel guides, perhaps you find a gorgeous hidden picnic spot you never knew about.
Theme and decorations
Lately, I am into bohemian style home decoration so I decided to extend my latest boho chic theme obsession for the party.
The foundation of this set-up was a cohesive theme and the idea to repurpose as much of things I already had as possible. I used some rugs and decorative pillows that I had from a previous parties and that I sourced from flea markets and garage sales, so was pretty inexpensive. I used the rugs instead of the classic picnic blanket for a more chic look. I found these round rattan stools in IKEA that I thought were perfect for the aesthetic I was going for.
An important element of the decoration are the flowers, I think flowers always make the table look beautiful, so for this party I choose greens, white flowers and light orange roses. Also consider that every element you bring to the set-up has to be cohesive with the overall party theme this includes the decorative objects, the silverware and plates.
The food is probably the most important element of a successful party, having good food makes everybody happy. For this event, I decided to have Curiocity Catering and they made us a delicious cheese plate, pimiento salad club sandwiches and a cranberry farro salad, all picnic – appropriate recipes.
For a great picnic you have to bring food that can be eaten cold and don’t require much preparation. Good ideas are whole foods, whole vegetables and fruits, cheese, crackers, etc. You can also prepare a easy recipe at home like fresh salad recipes, effortless sandwiches, filling grain salads and baked dessert. Easy to store and take them for dining alfresco this season.
For drinks I had new Organics by Red Bull sodas that come in four flavors Simply Cola, Bitter Lemon, Ginger Ale and Tonic Water. I also had fresh mint flavored water.
Last but also important is to play some music that reflects the ambience you are thriving for. It helps to sets the vibes of the evening. I brought a wireless speaker and played my favorite summer songs.
I am so glad you are reading me. I hope you enjoyed this guide as much as I enjoy sharing with you this picnic ideas fo summer gatherings at the beach.
Sending all love,
